White Sox at Rays gets a Sunday afternoon 7.5, and I do not need to pretend this is a clean scoring setup. The under asks for pitching to own the first half of the game, then for the indoor park to keep the environment boring. I can live with that at -110.
Anthony Kay is listed for Chicago, Griffin Jax for Tampa Bay, and this handicap starts there. I am not buying an under here off a blind low total. I need two starters who can keep the first five innings from turning into a chase, and the recent Kay and Jax notes are good enough to make 7.5 playable.
Jax's last start is the cleanest piece in this under. He worked 5.2 innings against Texas, allowed one earned run, and struck out 10. Pair that with a 3.74 ERA and 1.23 WHIP over 86.2 innings, and I have a Rays starter who can take real bite out of the total before Tampa Bay has to piece anything together late.
Kay's profile is the uncomfortable part, which is why this number is not lower. His 1.37 WHIP over 98.1 innings says there can be baserunners, and his last start included three second-inning runs against the Yankees. I still care that he lasted 5 1/3 and struck out seven in that same outing. For an under 7.5, I do not need Kay to be sharp all day. I need him to avoid the inning that turns three baserunners into four runs.
The game is listed indoors at Tropicana Field, and that matters with a total this low. I do not have to build around wind, heat, or a weird open-air run boost. That does not make an under automatic, but it does let me price the pitchers and run environment more cleanly.
Tampa Bay won this same series spot 1-0 on Saturday. Drew Rasmussen and four Rays relievers combined for 16 strikeouts, while Chicago's bullpen added two scoreless innings after Jordan Hicks and Noah Schultz. I am not treating one game as a script for the next one, but it is hard to ignore that this matchup just gave me a strikeout-heavy, low-scoring version one day ago.
This is the part bettors mess up with a 7.5. You do not need another 1-0 sweat to cash it. A 3-2 or 4-3 game still gets there, and the starter setup gives that kind of score enough room. Jax has the cleaner season line, Kay has enough recent length and strikeout output, and the indoor setting keeps me from paying extra tax for weather chaos.
If this loses, I think it is more likely Kay cracks first than Jax. The WHIP is the tell. A walk, a single, and one mistake with men on base can make 7.5 feel small fast. That is the risk I am accepting, and it is the reason I would not chase this if the number slips under 7.5.
I have a Rays starter in strong enough form, a White Sox starter who can give usable length if he controls the messy inning, and an indoor park setup that does not add noise to the total. The prior game also showed how quickly this series can tilt toward strikeouts and empty innings, even if I am not asking for another 1-0 final. At 7.5, I am taking the playable pitching base and accepting the Kay risk. Under 7.5, -110.
