F5 Under 4.5 is a little uncomfortable, which is usually where the right total starts. I don’t need a flawless pitching duel here. I need Greene and Pallante to keep the first five from turning into a mess.
Hunter Greene has a 3.23 ERA over 9 career starts against the Cardinals, with 65 strikeouts in 47.1 innings. That is the number that keeps pulling me back to the first five under. His season ERA is not pretty, but this matchup has not been an automatic St. Louis spot against him. If Greene is missing bats again, the Cardinals have to work for everything before the bullpens even matter.
Greene’s 2026 line sits at a 6.06 ERA through 16.1 innings, so I am not pretending there is no risk. The part I care about for an F5 total is the 26 strikeouts and 1.16 WHIP. That profile can still play under 4.5 early because strikeouts kill rallies and the WHIP says he has not just been handing out baserunners all over the park.
Andre Pallante’s last start against the Reds was clean: 1 run on 2 hits over 6 innings. I don’t need him to dominate like an ace for this ticket. I need five innings where Cincinnati does not stack crooked damage right away, and Pallante has already shown he can keep this offense from getting comfortable.
Pallante’s season line is 4.02 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 75 strikeouts across 105.1 innings. That is not the same strikeout ceiling Greene brings, but it is steady enough for a first-five under when the number is 4.5. He can pitch to contact and still be useful here as long as the Reds are not living in scoring position from the first inning.
The Cardinals have hit .204 over their last 10 games while going 3-7. That matters more to me than the name value of the matchup. Greene can be volatile, but if the current St. Louis version shows up, one big inning is not something I want to overpay for on the other side.
The full-game total is sitting at 8, and this F5 number gives me 4.5 at -125. I would hate this a lot more at 3.5 because then one bad frame can basically end it. At 4.5, there is room for one starter to bend a little without the bet needing perfect baseball for five straight innings.
The forecast is warm and overcast, with light wind listed from right to left. Warm weather by itself is not an under argument, so I am not using that as the reason to bet this. I just do not see enough there to move me off the starter-based read.
The Reds are the real objection. They are 6-4 over their last 10 and hitting .262 in that stretch, so this is not a dead offense I am blindly fading. Greene’s 6.06 ERA also leaves room for the ugly version to show up. If Pallante loses the first few innings or Greene’s strikeouts do not travel, 4.5 can disappear quickly.
I am taking the first five under because the starter setup is better than the surface fear. Greene has the swing-and-miss and the St. Louis history to control his side early, Pallante has already handled Cincinnati once, and the Cardinals’ recent bats have not earned an over tax from me. The full game can get weird later. I only need the starters’ first two turns to stay under five runs. F5 Under 4.5, -125.
