Red Sox -1.5 at -115 is a margin bet, not just a better-team bet. I need the starter gap to be big enough to ask for two runs. Tolle over Perkins is the reason I am willing to do it.
Payton Tolle comes in with a 3.31 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 96 strikeouts in 89.2 innings. Jack Perkins comes in at 6.75 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, and 76 strikeouts in 62.2 innings. That is the cleanest reason I am not just taking Boston to win. I am asking the Red Sox to separate.
Tolle’s last three outings give me enough to work with. He allowed 4 earned runs with 9 strikeouts over 5.2 innings against Baltimore, then 1 earned run with 7 strikeouts over 3.2 innings against the Mets, then 6 shutout innings with 6 strikeouts against the White Sox. The Baltimore line was not clean, but nine strikeouts in 5.2 innings still matters. If I am laying -1.5, I want the Boston starter missing bats and limiting cheap innings.
Perkins is not some empty arm with nothing to scare you. His last-7-games split shows 37 strikeouts in 30.2 innings. The issue is the rest of that same split, with a 7.34 ERA and 1.57 WHIP. That is the kind of profile I can attack on a run line, because Boston can get chances with men on base if that WHIP follows him into this start.
Boston is the favorite, and the moneyline around this matchup is heavier than I want to lay. I would rather use Red Sox -1.5 at -115 than pay a bigger price just to survive a one-run win. If the starter gap is the reason I am involved, I want the bet tied to that gap showing up on the scoreboard.
The game is at Sutter Health Park, with the venue listed at 330 feet to left, 403 to center, and 325 to right. The forecast tied to this matchup shows 91 degrees, 0% rain, and 8 mph wind. I am not making the whole pick about the park, but I do not see weather as a reason to back off the run line.
At -1.5, Boston does not get paid for a clean one-run win. I need Tolle’s 1.10 WHIP profile to keep the Athletics from stacking baserunners, then I need Perkins’ 1.42 WHIP profile to give Boston enough chances to create the bigger margin. That is the tradeoff. I like it more than laying the moneyline.
The main objection is Perkins’ strikeout ability. If he misses bats when Boston has runners on, the Red Sox can win the game and still not cover. Tolle also gave up 4 earned runs in his last start against Baltimore, so if that version shows up again, the -1.5 gets thin fast.
I am on Red Sox -1.5 at -115. Tolle has the lower ERA and WHIP, with enough recent swing-and-miss to trust the starter edge. Perkins can strike people out, but the ERA and WHIP profile has left too many openings. If the starters land close, I probably hate this ticket. I do not have them close enough. Red Sox -1.5, -115.
