Cease can make this look dumb fast. I still do not think the gap to Nick Martinez matches +145. I’m taking Rays ML at the dog price.
Nick Martinez comes in with a 2.65 ERA across 105.1 innings, a 1.12 WHIP, and 62 strikeouts. Dylan Cease is at a 2.56 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP, and 148 strikeouts across 98.1 innings. Cease has the louder strikeout profile, no argument there, but the run prevention gap is a lot smaller than the strikeout gap.
I’m not pretending Martinez misses bats like Cease. He does not. The bet is that run prevention and price matter more than strikeout flash in a moneyline spot where Tampa Bay does not need to win a style contest. If Martinez keeps this in the same low-scoring range his ERA and WHIP point to, +145 starts looking too fat.
Martinez’s last three starts fit what I need from this side. He allowed 2 earned runs over 5.1 innings against Seattle, 1 earned over 5.1 at Houston, and 1 earned over 5.2 against Arizona. That is 4 earned runs and 2 walks across 16 1/3 innings. I’ll take that from a plus-money starter on the road.
Cease’s last two starts were nasty: 8 scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts at San Francisco, then 7 scoreless with 9 strikeouts at Seattle. That is the uncomfortable part of this bet. The June 27 start against Texas is the reminder that the strikeouts do not erase everything, since he still gave up 4 earned runs and 5 walks in 4.2 innings while punching out 10.
Tampa Bay is listed with 435 runs, a .257 average, a .332 OBP, and a .399 slugging mark for this matchup. Toronto is listed at 397 runs, a .242 average, a .305 OBP, and a .382 slugging mark. I do not need Tampa Bay to mash Cease all night. I just need enough baserunners to make the plus price matter if Cease gives them an opening.
The bet number here is Rays ML +145. Other public prices I found on Tampa Bay were shorter, with listings around +126, +134, and +140. I’m not chasing Tampa Bay at any number, but +145 is the difference between a lean and a bet for me.
This can lose the obvious way: Cease lands the fastball, buries the breaking stuff, and Tampa Bay spends six innings behind in counts. His strikeout volume is real, and the last two starts show the ceiling. If the Rays do not make him work early, the plus price will not matter much.
I’m taking the better price on the team with the stronger listed hitting numbers and a starter who is close enough to Cease in run prevention to keep this from being priced like a mismatch. Cease is dangerous, so I want the cushion attached to the dog. Rays ML +145.
