Skubal at home at -120 is what keeps pulling me to Detroit. Philadelphia has the stronger season profile, and Wheeler is no bargain to face. I just do not think this price is asking the Tigers to be better for six months.

Skubal vs. Wheeler Is the Whole Bet

Detroit is expected to start Tarik Skubal, and Philadelphia is expected to counter with Zack Wheeler. That is why this number is still playable instead of inflated. I am not trying to talk myself into a Wheeler fade. I am taking the home starter who can make this tight enough for -120 to make sense.

Skubal’s Walk Number Matters Here

Skubal’s latest full line before his July 7 start had him at a 3.15 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and a 75/8 strikeout-to-walk profile across 65.2 innings. The WHIP and walk number are the part I care about most. Against Philadelphia, I do not want the Tigers handing out free chances and hoping to survive them.

The Recent Skubal Form Is Good Enough

Skubal just gave Detroit five innings of one-run ball with nine strikeouts against Oakland on July 7. He also came into this Phillies matchup with a 1.64 ERA over his previous two starts. That does not make this automatic. It does say Detroit is not just selling a name at home.

Wheeler Is Why the Price Is Still There

Wheeler’s profile is the obvious pushback. He came in at 9-1 with a 2.28 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, 98 strikeouts, and 87 innings. His latest cited outing before this matchup was seven innings, one run, and 14 strikeouts against Cincinnati. If Detroit were laying a bigger number, I would hate it. At -120, I can respect Wheeler and still take Skubal at Comerica.

The Series Spot Has a Little Bite

This is the rubber match and the final game of the series before the All-Star break at Comerica Park. Detroit lost 4-2 on July 11, so I am not pretending the Tigers are walking in with the hotter bats. The case is simpler than that. Skubal keeps them in the game, and the home side gets its shot late.

Detroit Was Not Dead in the Loss

The Tigers loaded the bases with nobody out in the eighth on July 11 and only got one run out of it on a double play. Annoying, yes. Dead offense, no. Eduardo Valencia also homered, and now Detroit gets the better starting-pitcher setup for the series decider.

The Obvious Problem Is Wheeler Taking Over

The way this loses is pretty clear. Wheeler can absolutely turn this into a low-scoring Philadelphia win if Detroit wastes early chances or keeps giving away at-bats with men on base. I am not betting that Wheeler is bad. I am betting Skubal keeps the gap small enough that the home price matters.

The Decision: Tigers ML -120

I am taking Tigers ML at -120. Skubal’s strike-throwing, recent run prevention, and home setup are enough for me at this number. It is not a comfortable fade of Philadelphia. It is a tight Skubal bet, and I only need Detroit to find one more swing at Comerica.
