I get why this total is sitting at 9 in Baltimore. Philadelphia’s power risk is real, and the Phillies starter spot was still TBD. I still do not want to pay for the blowup before Brandon Young gives me a reason to.
Brandon Young’s last three official starts give this under a real base: 6.1 innings and 1 earned run against Atlanta, 7.0 innings and 1 earned run at Houston, then 7.0 innings and 3 earned runs against Kansas City. That is the piece I care about most. If he gives Baltimore another useful start, Under 9 does not need some perfect, no-sweat script.
Young is listed with 17 games, 17 starts, 97.2 innings, a 3.13 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP this season. I am not asking him to be unhittable here. I am asking him to keep Philadelphia from turning the first half of the game into a chase, and his current profile is good enough for that at this number.
Philadelphia still has enough power to make any under uncomfortable. Kyle Schwarber leads the league in home runs, and Bryce Harper still has strong overall numbers even with a recent slump attached. The other side of it matters too: Philadelphia’s hitting has declined this season, so I am not treating this like peak Phillies offense just because the big bats are loud.
Philadelphia had not announced its starter for this July 31 game, and I am not pretending that is nothing. That adds range to the total, especially with the game at Camden Yards. The reason I can still get there is the number. At 9, I do not need both starters to look clean on paper before first pitch.
The early-evening forecast around Oriole Park is warm, with 84 degrees around 7 PM and 81 degrees around 8 PM, plus light winds. Warm weather is never my favorite thing when I am holding an under, but light wind keeps this from being a weather-only over read. I am not betting the park to kill offense. I am betting that the total is already giving enough respect to the risk.
Under 9 is different from trying to squeeze a low total. Eight runs cashes, and nine pushes. That matters in a game where the Phillies power profile can flip an inning and the Phillies starter spot still has some uncertainty. I can survive baserunners here. I just cannot survive the game turning loose early.
The cleanest way this loses is obvious. Philadelphia’s power shows up before Young settles, and the unknown on the Phillies starter side leaves more range than I would like. That is the risk with taking an under in this park. I am not ignoring it. I just do not think it is enough to make 9 an automatic over price.
The price is not free at -125, so the number matters. I would not want to chase this much lower. At 9, Young’s recent length and season profile give me enough to live with the Philadelphia power risk and the TBD starter risk. Under 9, -125.
