Foster Griffin on the other side is the reason Oakland is sitting at +125. I get why Washington is favored. I just do not think this has to be a perfect starter-vs-starter game for the Athletics ticket to breathe.
At +125, I do not need the Athletics to have the better starting pitcher on paper. I need the gap to be smaller than the price says, and I need Oakland to have enough ways to pull this away from a clean Griffin start. That is the bet for Sunday’s 4:05 PM ET first pitch at Sutter Health Park.
Foster Griffin brings the scary side of this handicap. He is listed at 10-2 with a 2.77 ERA, a 1.02 WHIP, and 110.1 innings, and he had a run of seven straight starts allowing one run or less following his July 8 start. I am not pretending that is soft. I am saying I do not want to pay full tax on that heater.
Jacob Lopez is the ugly part. The season line is 4-3 with a 6.83 ERA and a 1.79 WHIP over 55.1 innings, so there is no fake polish here. His last three MLB appearances show the volatility: 1.2 scoreless innings at Chicago, 3 innings with 4 earned at Detroit, and 2 innings with 7 earned against the Yankees. I do not need ace work from him. I need usable early innings and a game Oakland can still touch late.
The Athletics are coming off a 15-1 win over Washington in the second game of the series. One blowout does not automatically carry into the next day, but it matters when I am taking a home dog that needs proof of life at the plate. Oakland does not need to be the better offense over six months here. It needs enough pressure in this one game to make Griffin work for every clean inning.
J.T. Ginn covering 6.1 scoreless innings in that 15-1 win matters for how I read the next day. Oakland did not have to burn through a full bullpen mess just to finish Saturday. With Lopez’s profile, I care about what happens after the first signs of trouble. This ticket probably needs the A’s to manage the middle innings instead of letting the game break open right away.
The West Sacramento forecast sits in the high 80s into the low 90s around the early afternoon window, with no real rain concern showing. I am not turning that into a park-factor lecture. I just do not hate warm, clean hitting weather when I am holding plus money on a team that just put up 15 runs and needs a little chaos to matter.
Washington’s offense is the part that can make this look dumb fast. The Nationals are listed at 5.5 runs per game with a .767 OPS, and that is a dangerous matchup for a pitcher with Lopez’s full-season numbers. If Griffin stays in his current form and Washington gets to Lopez early, this bet can be dead before the price ever gets to breathe.
I am not betting Oakland because Lopez is safer than the numbers say. I am betting Oakland because +125 gives me room to take the home side in a rubber match where Griffin is the biggest reason Washington costs what it costs. Griffin can absolutely win this on his own, but Oakland just showed it can punch back and should not need a perfect game script. Athletics ML +125.
