Gilbert vs. deGrom is not where I want to need eight runs. Under 7.5 at -120 asks for clean starting pitching and not much cheap damage. That is a fair ask here.
The listed probable starters are Logan Gilbert for Seattle and Jacob deGrom for Texas. Gilbert brings a 3.38 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and 129 strikeouts across 120.0 innings. deGrom is sitting at a 3.76 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and 128 strikeouts across 105.1 innings. That is the first reason I am not rushing to bet runs at 7.5.
Gilbert tied a season high with 10 strikeouts in his last start. That matters against a Texas team that still has to earn baserunners first. If Gilbert is getting whiffs again, the Rangers need extra-base damage instead of long innings built on men reaching.
deGrom has struck out at least six hitters in eight of his last nine starts. I do not need vintage deGrom mythology to like the under. I need enough swing-and-miss to keep Seattle from stacking baserunners, and his current profile still gives me that.
Seattle was listed at .229 with a .310 OBP, .377 slugging, and .686 OPS for this matchup. That is not the kind of profile I want to back into deGrom if the total is asking for eight runs. The Mariners can still get one swing to hurt this, but the full-game run build is not automatic.
Texas was listed at .246 with a .320 OBP, .402 slugging, and .722 OPS. That is better than Seattle, and it is the part of the under that deserves respect. I still do not think it is enough by itself to make 7.5 cheap when Gilbert is carrying a sub-1.00 WHIP and just punched out 10.
The previous game did not force either bullpen to eat the whole thing. Texas got 7.0 innings from Nathan Eovaldi, so its bullpen covered 2.0 innings, while Seattle got 5.0 from Bryan Woo and covered 3.0 innings behind him. I am not making a fresh-pen guarantee, but I also do not have to build this under around exhausted relief groups.
Globe Life Field has the retractable-roof and climate-control setup, with the park facts listing an average temperature in the mid-70s. I am not claiming a specific roof call for this game. I am just not treating this like a simple Texas summer over where the park condition does all the work for the runs.
Under 7.5 is never comfortable if a starter loses command early. Texas has enough slugging to make Gilbert pay, and Seattle only needs one loud inning against deGrom to put the number under pressure. This can also get ugly late if either bullpen gives away baserunners and turns solo damage into multi-run innings.
I like the under because the number is still giving me 7.5 with two strikeout starters, two WHIP profiles that do not invite free baserunners, and team hitting numbers that do not force me to chase an over. The price at -120 is not free, but it is playable when the main handicap is run prevention before the bullpens even enter. Under 7.5, -120.
