Merrill Kelly is 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA across four July starts, and I’m not treating that like a throwaway split. Arizona is getting +105 at Pittsburgh at 6:40 p.m. ET. That is enough for me to take the cleaner current pitching angle and live with the obvious Pirates bat risk.
Kelly’s full-season line is not pretty at 8-8 with a 5.12 ERA and 1.48 WHIP, so I get why this is not priced like a comfortable Arizona spot. The part I care about is the recent turn. A 2.45 ERA over four July starts gives the Diamondbacks a live starter edge if that version shows up again, and +105 is a fair price to bet that the current form is more useful than the ugly season ERA.
Mitch Keller comes in at 6-7 with a 4.90 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over 108.1 innings. That is not an ace tax number. He has handled Arizona before, with a 2.29 ERA across six career starts against them, but I’m not paying extra for old matchup comfort when the season profile still leaves plenty of room for Arizona to make him work.
Arizona is 55-51, Pittsburgh is 54-52, and this opens the series at PNC Park. That is close enough for me to be picky with price. If this is basically a coin-flip matchup once the starters are lined up, I would rather be holding the plus-money side than asking Pittsburgh to justify favorite treatment.
The Pirates have the better season offensive profile entering this game. They have 553 runs with a .260 average, .338 OBP, and .422 slugging, while Arizona sits at 479 runs with a .242 average, .314 OBP, and .395 slugging. That is the biggest reason this is not a cleaner Diamondbacks click, but it is also why the +105 matters. I am getting paid to accept that risk.
I do not need Arizona to own the full offensive comparison to like the moneyline. Ketel Marte’s .457 slugging, Corbin Carroll’s 95 hits, and Geraldo Perdomo’s .358 OBP give the Diamondbacks enough top-end offense to turn Keller’s baserunners into stress. If Kelly keeps this game in a normal scoring range, Arizona has enough to win it without needing a perfect offensive night.
Arizona played a 10-7 game the day before, with Jonathan Loáisiga, Brandyn Garcia, and Kevin Ginkel all appearing after the starter. That does not kill the Diamondbacks side, but it does make Kelly’s workload matter more. I want this bet much less if Arizona is chasing outs from the bullpen by the middle innings, so the handicap starts with Kelly being steady enough to carry the first chunk of the game.
If Keller’s history against Arizona carries over and Pittsburgh’s offense gets Kelly back into his season-long problems, this can get uncomfortable fast. The Pirates have the stronger run profile, and Kelly’s 1.48 WHIP says there is still blow-up risk if the July form slips. That is the cleanest case against the bet, and it is why I would not chase this if the plus money disappears.
I’m taking Diamondbacks ML +105. This is not me saying Arizona is better in every column. It is me saying Kelly’s current form makes the starting-pitcher gap tighter than the full-season numbers look, and the matchup is close enough that I want the underdog price. At +105, I’ll take Arizona to open the series before I pay for Pittsburgh’s offense on the other side.
