Kohl Drake has one MLB start. That is the sweat. I am still taking Arizona at -110 because Miles Mikolas' current line is ugly enough to attack without needing Drake to be some finished product.
Mikolas is listed at 21 games, 3-7, a 5.60 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and 51 strikeouts in 98 innings. I do not need Arizona to turn this into a home run show. I need enough balls in play and enough baserunners to make Washington play from uncomfortable innings instead of clean ones.
Drake's sample is tiny, and that is the obvious risk with any rookie moneyline. His first MLB start still mattered: 5 innings, 1 earned run, and 5 strikeouts against the Athletics. That does not make him safe, but it keeps me from treating Arizona like it has no starter edge here.
The D-backs are at 4.47 runs per game with a .240/.311/.393 slash and a .704 OPS through 102 games. That is not an offense I want to oversell. Against Mikolas, the ask is simpler: put the ball in play, make the 1.34 WHIP matter, and give Drake a lead or a tied game into the middle innings.
Fifty-one strikeouts in 98 innings is the number I keep coming back to. If Arizona is chasing strikeouts all afternoon, this handicap looks dumb fast. If Mikolas is letting contact decide innings, -110 is a fair way to bet on the D-backs getting enough chances.
I am not pretending this is playable at any number. At -110, I am getting Arizona cheaper than the -118 and -120 prices that were also out there. That is the difference between a short favorite I can stomach and a road favorite I would start arguing with.
The July 25 box score does not push me off Arizona. The D-backs used Gerardo Carrillo for 2 innings and Taylor Clarke for 1, while Washington used Yean for 1.1 and Clayton Beeter for 1. That is not the reason to bet Arizona, but it also is not the kind of one-sided late-game tax that makes me throw away -110.
There is one Mikolas note I cannot ignore: a 3.79 ERA in 40.1 career innings across 8 games against Arizona, including 6 starts. That is better than his current-season ERA, so I am not treating him like a free square. I still care more about the 2026 line for this specific price, but that history is part of why I want -110 and not a bigger Arizona tax.
This is where the bet can get ugly. Washington's season line is better than Arizona's, with 559 runs, 149 homers, a .252/.327/.441 slash, and a .768 OPS through 102 games. If Drake's command backs up or the Nationals land the first damage swing, the rookie comfort disappears fast.
I am taking Arizona because Mikolas' season line gives the D-backs enough ways into this game, and Drake showed enough in the debut for me to live with the rookie part. I am not calling Drake proven, I am saying -110 is playable with these listed starters. If the starters change, so does the bet. Diamondbacks ML, -110.
