Eduardo Rodriguez against Carson Palmquist is why I’m cutting this to five innings. I don’t need Arizona for the whole game. I want the starter gap before the bullpens turn it into something else.
Rodriguez comes in with a 2.62 ERA, 116.2 innings, and a 1.22 WHIP across 20 games. Palmquist is listed at 8.74 ERA with a 1.676 WHIP over 11.1 innings. That is enough of a starter gap for me to lay -115 on the Diamondbacks in the first five instead of tying this to all nine innings.
For an F5 moneyline, I care less about the full staff and more about who is more likely to control the first half. Rodriguez has already handled real volume this season, and the run prevention has held up with it. Arizona does not need a huge offensive start if Rodriguez keeps Washington from grabbing the early lead.
This is not just me leaning on a season ERA and hoping it travels. Rodriguez’s last seven-game line sits at 3-1 with a 2.84 ERA, 38.0 innings, 25 strikeouts, and a 1.29 WHIP. That is stable enough at this price, especially with Palmquist being asked to match him early.
Palmquist does have swing-and-miss in the line, with 14 strikeouts in 11.1 innings. I’m not treating him like a free fade with nothing to miss bats. The problem is the rest of it: an 8.74 ERA and 1.676 WHIP means too many baserunners and too much damage for a first-five matchup against Rodriguez.
Palmquist opened for Washington earlier in the week before Miles Mikolas. Now he is listed as the probable starter here, but that still leaves me with questions about how clean the early innings are. If he is short, wild, or just not sharp the first time through, Arizona does not have to wait for the late innings to separate.
Rodriguez entered this matchup with a 3.09 ERA and 30 strikeouts in five career appearances against Washington. I’m not making that the whole bet, because the current form matters more. It does help that this is not a totally blind matchup for the starter I’m backing.
Arizona was already sitting as the full-game favorite, but the best part of this handicap is right at the front. I do not want to pay for the bullpen innings if I do not have to. F5 keeps the bet tied to Rodriguez against Palmquist, which is the matchup I actually want.
The risk is real because Washington is not some automatic lefty fade. CJ Abrams is swinging it well, and James Wood is the kind of bat that can wreck a clean Rodriguez angle fast. If Rodriguez misses spots early or Washington stacks baserunners right away, the starter edge can get uncomfortable before it has time to matter.
I’m taking Arizona in the first five because the starter gap is clear and the price is still playable. Rodriguez gives me the better form, the better season-long run prevention, and the cleaner early-game profile. Palmquist might miss bats, but I’m not pricing him like a near coin flip against this version of Rodriguez. F5 Diamondbacks ML, -115.
