Gavin Williams is the reason I’m willing to lay Cleveland -1 here. Arizona can hit, so I’m not faking comfort, but -105 lets me back the better starter without needing the full -1.5.
The listed matchup is Merrill Kelly against Gavin Williams at Progressive Field, and that is where my card starts. Williams is sitting with a 3.71 ERA and 168 strikeouts on the probable line, while Kelly comes in at 4.86 ERA and 71 strikeouts. That gap is big enough for me to lay the -1 instead of only asking Cleveland to win the game.
Williams has been in the mid-3 ERA range with a 1.10 WHIP. Kelly’s season line is rougher at 4.86 ERA and 1.45 WHIP. I do not need Cleveland to rate as the better offense if Williams gives them the better opening stretch.
The 168 strikeouts attached to Williams stand out because Arizona has enough offense to punish balls in play. Strikeouts are the cleanest way to keep the D-backs from stacking a rally, and Williams has shown that ceiling recently. His seven scoreless innings with two hits allowed and 11 strikeouts against Minnesota is the exact version that makes this number playable.
Kelly is not an automatic fade off form. He just went 5.2 scoreless at Pittsburgh with four hits, one walk, and six strikeouts. I still have to price the full line, and that is 4.86 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, and a much smaller strikeout count than Williams.
I prefer Guardians -1 at -105 over chasing the bigger -1.5 payout. If Cleveland wins by one, I do not want a starter-edge handicap turning into a full loss. This split gives me push protection while still making the bet about Williams being clearly ahead of Kelly.
The risk is obvious: Arizona can hit. The D-backs were listed at 4.5 runs per game with a .706 OPS, ahead of Cleveland’s 4.0 runs per game and .684 OPS, and they came into this spot hot after the break. If Williams loses command or the game turns into too much contact, Arizona has the offense to flip it.
Arizona just won 12-8 in this series, so I am not ignoring how live those bats are. That game also had Paul Sewald allowing five earned runs without recording an out, even with Kevin Ginkel and Jonathan Loáisiga finishing it. I am not calling the whole Arizona bullpen soft, but Kelly plus that recent late-game scare is not enough for me to get off the Williams edge.
I’m taking Cleveland because Williams is the arm I trust most in this matchup. Arizona’s offense is the reason I do not want to lay -1.5, but the starter gap is enough for me at -105. If Cleveland only wins by one, I get the push instead of a full loss. Guardians -1, -105.
