Cubs @ Padres

Over 8 is supported by Walker Buehler's 5.75 ERA and 1.62 WHIP, Cabrera's walk rate, recent high-total games for both teams, and a live board already sitting at 8.5.

This over is playable because the current board is already sitting at 8.5, and the pick is only asking for 8. That extra half run matters in a matchup where one starter is struggling badly and the other still brings enough traffic risk to keep innings alive.

Walker Buehler is the clearest over trigger on the board

Buehler has a 5.75 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP through 20.1 innings. That is not a profile you want protecting an under against a Cubs lineup that still has real thump in the middle.

Chicago also still has Seiya Suzuki active, and his current line is strong. He is carrying a .990 OPS with 5 home runs in 17 games.

Edward Cabrera is good enough to win, but not clean enough to kill a total

Cabrera has pitched well overall with a 2.73 ERA, but the WHIP is still 1.18 and he has issued 11 walks in 29.2 innings. That control piece matters more for totals than for sides.

Free baserunners are exactly how an over gets there without needing both starters to get shelled. One extra walk in front of a double changes the shape of the game fast.

Both recent scoring profiles have enough over outcomes

The Cubs' last ten games include totals of 18, 13 and 14. San Diego's last ten include 15, 13 and 9.

This is not a matchup where both teams are dragging a string of 3-2 and 4-1 games into the park. The higher-end scoring outcomes have shown up enough on both sides to make eight feel short.

The Padres lineup still has enough live bats even with Manny Machado listed day to day

Machado is on the day-to-day report but is still in the expected order, and Fernando Tatis is active near the top as well. The current card has San Diego bringing its main names to the game instead of a watered-down lineup.

When the live market is already sitting at 8.5, taking over 8 gives you a better number than the current board on a game that already carries run-creation paths on both sides.

Decision

Over 8 is playable because Buehler's current line is rough, Cabrera still brings enough walk risk to extend innings, and both recent scoring samples have enough high-end totals to support a number in this range. Getting an 8 when the live board is 8.5 is the price edge that matters here.

You do not need chaos. You just need a 5-4 type game.
