This is mostly a Dylan Cease number for me. St. Louis is not sending out a punching bag, so I do not want the full run-line tax. I want Toronto to win, with a little more cover than -1.5 asks for.
The listed matchup has Kyle Leahy for St. Louis and Dylan Cease for Toronto, and the bigger starter edge sits with the home side. Cease owns a 2.46 ERA and 1.09 WHIP over 113.1 innings this season. Leahy has been solid at 3.55 ERA across 101.1 innings, but his 1.34 WHIP leaves more room for Toronto to build pressure without needing a cheap homer to do all the work.
Cease is not getting this price off reputation alone. His last seven-game split sits at 1.79 ERA with a 0.97 WHIP, and his last start was loud, nine innings, one hit, no earned runs, 12 strikeouts in Boston. I do not need him to repeat that. I need him to keep Toronto from chasing the game early, and his current form gives him a real shot to do that.
I am not pretending Leahy is an auto-fade. His last seven-game split is 1.69 ERA with a 0.91 WHIP over 37.1 innings, which is exactly why I am not rushing to lay a full -1.5. The Cardinals starter can keep this tight. The bet is that Cease gives Toronto the better base, and the -1 number respects that Leahy is throwing well too.
Toronto had Thursday off after a 5-2 win in Washington on Wednesday. St. Louis played Thursday, lost 4-2 in 10 innings to the Cubs, then had to turn around for this series in Toronto. That does not cash a ticket by itself, but on a -1 spread it matters. If this gets into the sixth, seventh, or eighth inning close, I would rather be holding the side that did not just play extras and travel.
Toronto is sitting around -188 on the moneyline, with St. Louis around +159 and the total listed at 7.5. I do not love laying almost two dollars in MLB unless the setup is very clean. The -1 at -130 is the compromise I like better here. It keeps me attached to the Cease edge without forcing me to pay the full moneyline price.
This game is at Rogers Centre with the retractable-roof tag, so I am not making this a weather bet. Good. I want the handicap to stay simple: Cease against Leahy, Toronto with the cleaner rest setup, and a price that does not demand a blowout. When the total is 7.5, one clean starting-pitcher edge can be enough to matter.
The obvious problem is Leahy. If his recent form carries over, St. Louis can drag this into a 2-1 or 3-2 type game where the -1 either pushes or gets sweaty fast. That is the risk, and it is why I am not selling this like Toronto should run away. A one-run Blue Jays win is very live in this setup, which is also why the -1 line is better than needing Toronto by multiple runs.
Cease is the starter I trust more, Toronto has the better rest spot, and the market is already asking a bigger price if you only want the moneyline. I will take the push protection over laying the full run line, especially with Leahy throwing well enough to keep St. Louis in range. Blue Jays -1, -130.
