Ryan Johnson’s 7.34 ERA is the first thing everyone sees. I get it. I still do not need the Angels to be the better team to take +1.5 at -110.
Johnson brings a 7.34 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 34 strikeouts over 41.2 innings into this start, so no, I am not pretending this is a clean pitching edge. The bet is different. Angels +1.5 gives Los Angeles room to lose by one, and that matters when Milwaukee’s starter has left runs on the board lately too.
Shane Drohan is the easy reason to respect Milwaukee here. He is 5-4 with a 3.51 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 82 strikeouts in 82 innings. That is a much cleaner profile than Johnson’s, but it also explains why the Angels are getting the extra run instead of asking me to lay into Los Angeles straight up.
Drohan has allowed 5 earned runs, 3 earned runs and 3 earned runs across his last three listed outings. He worked into the sixth each time, so this is not some instant blowup case. But if he is giving the Angels even a small scoring lane, +1.5 is a much different ask than needing Los Angeles to control the whole game.
The Johnson side is uncomfortable because the disaster start is sitting right there: 8 earned runs in 3.1 innings at San Francisco in his last appearance. The two before that were less ugly, with 1 earned run over 5 innings against Detroit and 3 earned runs over 5 innings at Minnesota. I am not asking him to outpitch Drohan. I am asking for enough outs to keep the Angels within range.
Milwaukee enters this game at 67-41, while Los Angeles is 42-67. That gap is the reason this price looks the way it does. I am not fighting the idea that Milwaukee has the better overall profile. I am just taking the extra run and a half with a home dog when the favorite’s starter has not been fully clean either.
This is where the bet gets playable. Los Angeles can be second best for a lot of the night and still cash if the game lands inside one run. With the Angels at home, I would rather take the cushion than force the perfect outright upset case.
The forecast around first pitch showed warm temperatures, no listed rain risk and light wind. I am not turning weather into the pick, and I do not need to. I just do not see a supported weather reason to treat this as a weird game script where the run line gets harder to read.
The obvious way this loses is Johnson getting tagged before the Angels can make the extra run matter. A 7.34 ERA and 1.54 WHIP are not small warnings. If he is putting runners on right away and Milwaukee gets damage before the middle innings, +1.5 can feel dead fast.
I am not betting the prettier team. I am betting the number. Drohan deserves respect, but his last three starts still left runs on the board, and Johnson only needs a usable stretch for the Angels to hang inside one at home. Angels +1.5, -110.
