AJ Smith-Shawver comes into this start listed by MLB at 0-0 with no 2026 ERA and 0 strikeouts. That does not make this an automatic over, but it is enough uncertainty for an 8.5 to matter. I am on Braves-Mets Over 8.5 at -105.
The probable starters are AJ Smith-Shawver for Atlanta and Sean Manaea for New York, and the Atlanta side is the part of this total I keep coming back to. MLB lists Smith-Shawver without a real 2026 ERA, WHIP, or innings base before this start. I am not treating that like a normal settled starter profile on a full-game total.
Manaea has worked 22 games with a 4.52 ERA, 85.2 innings, 84 strikeouts, and a 1.35 WHIP. That is not a disaster, but it is not clean enough for me to want an under at this number. Atlanta does not need to bury him early. Four or five innings of baserunners can be enough to get this total moving.
His last three starts had two strong results and one shaky one: 6.0 innings with 1 earned run against the Dodgers, 4.2 innings with 4 earned runs at Philadelphia, and 7.0 innings with 2 earned runs against Kansas City. That is why I do not want to oversell the over. Manaea can pitch well, but there is still enough volatility in the recent log to keep nine runs in range.
The Braves are listed at 4.9 runs per game with a .249 average, .315 OBP, .416 slugging mark, .731 OPS, and 140 home runs. That is the offense I trust more to create the first real push on this number. If Atlanta gets Manaea working with men on or turns one mistake into a multi-run inning, Over 8.5 starts looking a lot smaller.
New York’s offense is not carrying the same profile as Atlanta, but 4.2 runs per game and 129 home runs is enough for this bet. The Mets do not need to win the slugfest by themselves. Against a Braves starter without an established 2026 MLB sample, three or four runs from New York would put a lot of pressure on the under.
The Mets beat the Braves 14-3 on July 27. I am not using one blowout as the whole handicap, because that is lazy and usually expensive. It still matters that these teams just played a game where the scoring ceiling was obvious, and this total only needs nine.
The July 27 box score had Atlanta using Martin Perez for 5.0 innings, Connor Thomas for 2.2, and Jorge Mateo for 0.1. New York got 0.2 from Huascar Brazoban and 2.0 from Daniel Duarte after Zac Thornton went 6.1. I am not pretending that gives me a perfect bullpen read, but it does keep the full-game over alive if either starter fails to give length.
The clean under case is Manaea giving New York six or seven strong innings and Smith-Shawver being sharper than the 2026 MLB listing suggests. Manaea has already shown that kind of start recently. If Atlanta only gets one big swing instead of steady baserunners, the over can get stuck.
I do not need both offenses to explode here. I need Atlanta’s stronger scoring profile to make Manaea work, and I need New York to chip in against a starter without an established 2026 MLB sample. At 8.5, a 5-4 game gets there. Over 8.5, -105.
