Zac Thornton is why I’m not treating this like a standings bet. Atlanta has the better season profile, no argument there. Mets ML at -105 is still live if Thornton keeps this thing small early.
Braves at Mets is set for Monday night at Citi Field, with Zac Thornton matched against Martín Pérez. Thornton’s current line is 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA, 23.1 innings, 17 strikeouts, and a 0.86 WHIP. That is enough for me to give the Mets a real starting-pitcher case at a near pick’em price.
Thornton entered this start with a 1.93 ERA over four starts and an 18-inning scoreless streak. I’m not pretending that makes him automatic, but it changes how I want to read this number. At -105, I do not need six months of ace proof. I need him to be the sharper starter in this matchup right now.
Martín Pérez’s current 2026 line is solid: 6-6, 3.38 ERA, 85.1 innings, 65 strikeouts, and a 1.20 WHIP. That keeps Atlanta dangerous, and it is why this is not some cheap fade of the Braves. Pérez deserves respect, but Thornton’s form gives the Mets enough pitching cover to take the short home price.
The pick is Mets moneyline at -105, and that price was sitting in the market with Atlanta around -117 and an 8.5-run total. Mets -105 also showed up at multiple books. I care about that because this is not asking me to lay a big favorite tax on a 44-62 team. It is basically asking whether Thornton can make the Mets the right side for one night.
Atlanta came in 62-43 with a +107 run differential, while New York came in 44-62 with a -62 run differential. That is the ugly part of the Mets case, and I’m not hand-waving it away. The pushback is that the Mets led the season series 4-3 entering the eighth meeting, so this has not played like a clean standings mismatch.
The Mets’ bullpen just threw five scoreless innings in a previous win over the Dodgers after Freddy Peralta lasted four innings. Cionel Pérez covered six outs, then Brooks Raley, Luke Weaver, and Devin Williams finished it. I’m not making this a full bullpen bet, but I like having a recent example of New York protecting a game if Thornton gives them the early version they’ve been getting.
Matt Olson is the obvious way this gets wrecked. He entered the matchup as Atlanta’s hit leader with 109 hits, 53 extra-base hits, a .266 average, .343 OBP, and .527 slugging. If Olson creates the big swing or Pérez outpitches Thornton, this Mets ticket can get ugly fast.
I’m on Mets ML at -105. I am not calling New York the better team, and the season numbers say the opposite. I just do not think this price makes me pay for Atlanta’s full edge when Thornton is carrying a 1.93 ERA and an 18-inning scoreless streak into a home start.
